"Year in Review" - 2023

Posted by Merit Celaire on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 - 01:32 PM

Despite the major turbulent issues that have been trying to slow down yours truly (including but not limited to resituating myself on the backend after having to upgrade our site hosting account to a "paying client" status, as well as my account access issues with Discord), the show must go on. More specficially, I still promised myself I'd at least take care of wriring this latest "Year in Review" article looking back at the music operation's activity from the previous 2023 year. As always, we've got two categories to share including what featured Super Mario (main, spinoff, and branched) installments have been involved, as well as the featured Super Nintendo music instrument set involvement. So ready or not, here we go; let's get down to it.

But before we get to those categories, these are the "totals" to report for the previous 2023 year, which state that:

* 33 songs were covered during the course of the previous year, which involved...
* 8 featured Mario series' installments (main/spinoff/branched), as well as...
* 14 featured Super Nintendo music instrument sets that were called on to do the song cover process itself

As compared to the "Year in Review" for 2022, we had a sustantial jump from 18 songs covered to 33 from the 2023 year, which results in a 15 song difference (more specifically, this was much better for 2023; and I think I know why, which will be elaborated on later). But I would be lying if I told you that competition between both the featured Super Mario videogame installments as well as the featured Super Nintendo music instrument sets wasn't fierce and chaotic; nothing could be further from the truth.

Here's that evidence in question - first, let's start with listing the featured Mario game installments that were involved in our song covers for last year. Along with that, it's also time to announce which one was in the "winner's circle" for 2023 - and it should come as no surprise that Super Mario Bros. Wonder trounced all other installments that were involved ever since yours truly started doing song covers focused on the score of said game in early November of last year. Those composers at Nintendo have done it again writing insanely addictive tunes related to said game, and I have a strong feeling this was one of the major points as to why Super Mario Bros. Wonder stood out to all of us dedicated Mario series enthusiasts (even to the point that it nailed an award for "Best Family Game" during "The Game Awards" happenings late last year as well). The other involved Mario games for the previous year looked like they couldn't stand a chance when Super Mario Bros. Wonder came on the scene, which can be seen on the following chart below:

Featured Game Installment
Song Covers Done For 2023
Mario Tennis Aces
5
Mario Kart Tour
3
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
4
Mario Kart Arcade GP 2
3
Super Mario Party
3
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
9
Mario Sports Superstars
1
Mario Tennis Open
5

As for the featured Super Nintendo music instrument sets involved for the previous year, that recent Super Mario Bros. Wonder installment had something to do with it song covers wise - because the stuff that yours truly did so far doing arrangements of songs from Super Mario Bros. Wonder has placed the instrument set of SmartBall (Sony Imagesoft/System Sacom/Game Freak) in the winner's circle territory here! The rest of the involved SNES music instrument sets couldn't even come close to this as well; either in ties and/or even being used only once (even though the instruments set for RoboCop 3 (Ocean) and Space Ace (Absolute Entertainment/Empire Software/O.D.E.) were the latest additions in my trying to cover certain songs from Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Tennis Open). Here's the chart in question for all of the Super Nintendo music instrument sets that were involved in the previous 2023 year:

Featured SNES Music Instrument Set
Instrument Set Usage For 2023
Lethal Enforcers
2
Mega Man Soccer
2
SmartBall
6
RoboCop 3
1
Tiny Toon Adventures: Wacky Sports Challenge
4
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!
4
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters
1
Spider-Man and the X-Men: Arcade's Revenge
3
Bugs Bunny: Rabbit Rampage
1
Super Castlevania IV
2
Inspector Gadget
1
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (SNES Version - Bandai)
1
Space Ace
4
David Crane's Amazing Tennis
1

And that's all that yours truly has to share to finally conclude the 2023 year itself after a lot of turbulent matters that I'm still trying to sort out at this time. I'm just hoping I can get them all resolved very soon because as of the date and time of this posting, we're getting close to placing this month of January in the history books and our "anniversary month" is incoming after that. And yes, I've been slowly working on our first batch of new Super Nintendo music styled covers to start off 2024 (which you're able to check the statuses of here; apparently, another batch of songs from WarioWare: Smooth Moves has gotten my attention as of late, along with a "main theme" song. But will it be enough to claim the top spot in next year's "Year in Review"? God only knows.). I'm just hoping that I can still find the strength and motivation to get most of the backlog cleared, if not all... because apparently, there's a certain upcoming Mario series installment that definitely has my attention big time... and here's a hint: that same game in question has a late March 2024 release date attached to it. So let's hope for the best for the rest of this year itself, and I'll see you awesome people again soon. Take care for now.
